I am a business person by training, a maker at heart. I come from management educational background and work experience in banking, marketing and corporate communication. I wanted to use my past experience to pursue the things I'm passionate about and fulfil an intrinsic longing I always had for discovery, tinkering, making and inventing and to facilitate these for everyone. For me the idea of a makerspace is all about inspiring and providing possibilities for people to learn, explore, collaborate, acquire practical skills in design and fabrication; and a place for ideas and visions to meet and co-create a better future.

Every human being has the capacity and the right to express creativity, to continue unconstrained learning, pursue personal growth, to apply knowledge to a real purpose and achieve full potential. I learned about the maker movement and immediately felt graviated towards it with unfaltering will to have a role in bringing it to our region; and there's no better place to do this, to pave the way for change and effect fast progress than Dubai. As a local grassroot startup and the first makerspace in the UAE, OriginBase has quickly grown with the local maker community to become unique in its own way. The makerspace is our core platform upon which we seek not only to enable the local maker community but to harness a model and an ecosystem for innovation and for the maker movement to grow and flourish in our region.

What do you love about this place?

I am more into hands on, arts and crafts stuff. I am very curious about everything. I always feel obliged to know how things work. But I am personally more into crafts, woodworking, leathercraft, pottery and everything touched and worked with the hands. But ofcourse, with technology, there are a lot of stuff you can upgrade!

According to Les Brown, “In every day, there are 1,440 minutes. That means we have 1,440 daily opportunities to make a positive impact.” How has OriginBase impacted your life?

It really turned my life upside down. I started this journey and there is no way I can let it be on its own, I have to be involved in everything. I work 24*7, I do not have days off or vacations or remunerations or anything, lots of sacrifices, but its fun! But the bigger picture is what keeps me driven, and we are getting there, slowly but surely. This MakerCulture is my vision. And I believe in it. OriginBase is growing, it is unique in its own way. Someday, I will think, I did the right thing.

Orwa Diraneyya

Maker, Computer Engineer, ex Educator

There is a very strong connection between the maker community and coffee enthusiasts. People want to know how coffee machines work, the temperature, the pressure, the timings, the profiles! My personal maker project was the coffee roaster. We derive pleasure from learning and exploring.”

Orwa, tell us something about yourself. What brought you to OriginBase?

While pursuing my masters’ degree, I worked as a barista at the same time.  I had a passion for coffee and the roaster.

I joined OriginBase as a maker. It wasn’t long since I started working here everyday. There is a very strong connection between the maker community and coffee enthusiasts. People want to know how coffee machines work, the temperature, the pressure, the timings, the profiles, my personal maker project was the coffee roaster.

What projects do you work on?

I started from scratch to learn how to use all kinds of machinery out here. I always had it in me. I was always intrigued by seeing a product and just trying to imagine how they made it, how is it built! I started learning about product design, applications and techniques, technologies out there. I did a lot of reading and I started understanding the process and what it takes, and it was something lacking in our kind of society. We are more consumer oriented economies. But I started connecting the dots, you need space, you need machinery, you need knowledge, you need people with the same drive and it all started from there!

How did your love story and enchantment initiate with coffee?

Since my college days, as I was working as a barista, which was really fun! I did not used to make much money, but everyday was a happy day at work.

What are the projects you work on, at OriginBase?

What I adore about OriginBase is that it is very cross disciplinary place. With my background as a computer engineer, I have the experience of making circuits and writing computer programs, yet I always enjoy learning more and doing different enterprises at Originbase. Different tools and different fabrication processes is what I revolve around, and I wish we can help entrepreneurs fabricating their own products and designing their artworks.

What is your favorite aspect of this place?

The tools, the creativity, and the fact that we all are on the same page. We derive pleasure from learning and exploring. It is not that we want to get a job done, but we enjoy the process of learning thoroughly.

Describe yourself in one word?

Curious. Curious is the word.

Sikendar Hemani

Engineer, Aerospace Engineer in the making, Actor, Tinkerer

“What  makes this place unique, is that there is always a project for me to pick and learn from. I am the king of one, the jack of all.”

Tell us a bit about yourself. What brought you to OriginBase?

I have always been a curious person concerning engineering or “making things”. Before joining OriginBase, I was in piloting. When I came here, I met Orwa at a function and it suddenly brought a light that I will be under the same roof surrounded by all sorts of engineers: electrical, architectural, design, mechanical. The multifaceted quality of this place attracted me here, at OriginBase.

Quoted by Miguel el Portugues, “If you undertake projects in mind, never leave for tomorrow.” What projects do you work on?

As I said, king of one, I am a design engineer, so anything that needs to be made, I pick that up, and I design it first. That’s the basic before we think of moving forward. Apart from that , there's always projects for me to pick and learn from it ,in fields and areas of engineering that were not necessarily taught  at college.

Why is OriginBase a big-league to you?

Everyday feels “brand new”.  Everyday there is a problem which I haven’t come across before. I get to learn from such problems every single day. There is a new story at OriginBase everyday.

Describe yourself in one word.

Curious. Otherwise what am I here for?

Sarfaraz Ahmed

Mechanical Engineer, Aerospace Engineer in the making, Learner, Maker.

Everyday is an opportunity at this place. I see new stuff here everyday. Everyday is a surprise.”

Sarfaraz, what brought you to OriginBase?

I am a mechanical engineer and while I was looking for a job, I applied to all the usual places where people apply, and fortunately Orwa found me online. He thought my expertise and caliber was impressive. He Called me over at OriginBase, showed me around, and I was pretty nervous but he chilled me out, and I grew in this place, my ideas, grew with the team. The OriginBase crowd wanted my help and I found myself useful.

What’s your area of work at OB?

I work on everything that the members work on as I give my input on anything and everything Mr. Ahmad or Orwa wants me to do. We are engineers and we work in every zone. I am good at metal working as I am a mechanical engineer, so when we got the metal shop up and working, I knew the whereabouts of it, that’s my zone. I am confident about it.

How has OriginBase impacted your life?

Since my college days, as I was working as a barista, which was really fun! I did not used to make much money, but everyday was a happy day at work.

As Criss Jami says, “Like most arts, the link between the mind and the pen can chain you like an enslaved workaholic. Even on an intended vacation you suddenly have this killer urge to record whatever the vacation may teach.” What attracts you to OriginBase everyday?

I want to learn, just learn. Everyday is an opportunity at this place. I see new stuff here everyday. Everyday is a surprise. Our day begins and ends with exploring and discovering new things here at OriginBase.

Describe yourself in one word.

Definitely a Learner.
